Read and Publish Agreements for Gold Open Access journal publishing: Home

Read and Publish Agreements - sometimes also referred to as Transitional or Transformative Agreements - enable universities to fund Open Access journal publishing for staff while also subscribing to academic journals in the traditional way to maintain access to non-Open Access articles. They are intended to avoid 'double payment' by universities for access to publications, as well as to promote a shift to purely Open Access publishing in academic journals over time. 

These agreements cover both subscription access to a given publisher’s journals plus the costs of full Gold Open Access publication of new research articles in most of the publisher’s journals. The agreements are negotiated at UK national level by Jisc on behalf of all universities and London Met’s participation in them is coordinated by Library Services.

To be able to use these agreements there are a few conditions you need to fulfill:

• You need to have a London Met affiliation.
• Be the corresponding author for the article.
• Publish in a journal covered by the agreement (we can help you check that).
• Publish and article "type" covered by an agreement (we can help you check that).

There are slight differences between agreements, so please see eligibility details for the individual deals listed below. If all the above conditions are met then the cost of your APC may be covered by one of our agreements.

Articles accepted for Open Access publishing with an eligible journal covered by one of the following Read and Publish Agreements will not be subject to Article Processing Charges (APCs) as long as the corresponding author is affiliated with London Met. This publication route will satisfy the Open Access requirements of most funding bodies, although please check carefully to ensure your chosen journal is covered by the relevant publisher agreement prior to submission.

Each deal will work in a slightly different way. It is important to familiarise yourself with the terms that are relevant to you. Some of the deals are capped (limited to a certain number of APCs across the institution signed up to the agreement). It may not be possible to know until the point of acceptance whether you will be able to publish gold open access through the agreement.

This agreement enables Open Access publication of all research papers and conference proceedings with ACM where the corresponding author is employed by London Met.

Corresponding authors must use their London Met email address when entering their contact details. After acceptance of a paper, use the ACM eRights system to select the Institutionally Paid Open Access option and the Creative Commons (CC) licence option. If your research paper is externally funded, ensure you apply the required CC licence level in line with the funding body’s Open Access policy.

This agreement enables Open Access publication of research articles in all ACS journals.

Corresponding authors must use their London Met email address and select London Met from a drop-down menu available during the manuscript submission stage. The ACS Open Science pages give further information.

This agreement enables Open Access publication of research, review and Rapid Communication articles in most Cambridge journals.

Corresponding authors should specify their London Met affiliation during the submission process and select the ‘Seek Funding’ option at the Article Processing Charge stage.

This agreement enables Open Access publication of research articles in Elsevier ‘hybrid’ journals only (i.e. those journals which have a mix of open and subscription articles), including Cell Press and The Lancet hybrid titles.

Corresponding authors must specify their London Met affiliation and email address during the submission process.

The agreement also provides a 15% discount on Article Processing Charges for articles in Elsevier’s fully Open Access journals (i.e. those journals that only publish Open Access articles).

This agreement enables Open Access publication of research articles in Nature Portfolio / Research journals, including the main Nature journal. Please note that it does not cover Nature Reviews, Palgrave or Springer journals at present.

Corresponding authors must specify their London Met affiliation and use their London Met email address when submitting papers for publication.

This agreement enables Open Access publication of research and review articles in most Wiley and Hindawi journals.

Corresponding authors must specify their London Met affiliation during the publishing approval process. Authors publishing in Wiley ‘hybrid’ journals (i.e. those that publish a mix of open and subscription articles) must select the Open Access publication option.
