NHS HEI Open Athens

Students on courses which have significant clinical placements throughout the period of study are eligible for NHS HEI Open Athens accounts. This includes BSc Nursing (Adult), BSc Dietetics, BSc Dietetics and Nutrition, MSc Dietetics and Nutrition, and MSc Physiotherapy (pre-registration).

Open Athens is a log-in authentication method, but also provides a national core collection of resources to those with NHS HEI Open Athens accounts. See the 'resources available tab' for more information.

When students do placements in an NHS Trust, it is advisable to get an additional Open Athens account through the trust because different trusts will have paid for different resources on top of the NHS HEI core collection.

A few weeks after enrolment you will receive an activation code to your London Met email account. Please check your junk folder in case it's gone there. Use the link in that message to activate your account and create your own password.

If you have not received an activation code, or the code has expired, please email your Librarian at alls@londonmet.ac.uk to send you a new one.

To log into Open Athens and access available resources:

  1. Go to https://openathens.nice.org.uk/;
  2. Click on the log-in button in the top right-hand corner;
  3. Click on 'my resources' in the left-hand menu.

You will then see a list of resources you can link through to. Some of these are listed under the platforms on which they are hosted, for instance Ovid. See the 'resources available' tab for a list of resources and which platforms you will find them on.

Please note that some of the resources available with your NHS HEI Open Athens account are also available through London Met Library via the University's own subscriptions. Of particular note is CINAHL Complete, which has more content and more full-text access than the basic CINAHL package available through NHS HEI Open Athens.

However, there are some valuable extra resources that your log-in will allow you to use, including, but not limited to:

  • Medline (via Ebsco, Ovid or Proquest);
  • Embase (via Ovid);
  • British Nursing Index (via Proquest);
  • EMCARE (via Ovid);
  • Social Policy and Practice (via Ovid);
  • HMIC (via OVID);
  • BMJ Journals (some of these are available through London Met Library);
  • ELearning for Health (HEE Elfh Hub);
  • Knowledge and Library Hub (searches across many of the databases included available).
