The Library of Congress in America has millions of items in it's digital collections, but if you find this a bit overwhelming, they have put together a set sorted by various subjects. These are just a small number from the collections, but it gives you an idea of the kind of things you can find. All content featured is free to use and has no known copyright issues, and there is a lot of interesting visual content there.

For example we couldn't resist having a look at the 'libraries' section, and we couldn't agree more with this sentiment!

Vintage poster promoting library use features a graduation cap, glasses, and the text "For greater knowledge on more subjects, use your library more often."

For greater knowledge on more subjects use your library more often. Federal Art Project, sponsor. No known restrictions on publication.

Or for architectural, photography or pop-culture interest try the amazing John Margolies Roadside America Archive collection which introduces you to 11,000 colour photographs of vernacular commercial structures, including restaurants and theatres, along U.S. streets and highways, 1969-2008. If you enjoy that, find more here, you will be lost for hours browsing the thousands of images!

A large, whimsical building shaped like a beagle dog stands in a grassy field under a clear blue sky. A smaller beagle statue is beside it.

And then of course there is always cats to look at...

Four kittens dressed in shirts sit on grass having a picnic. Plates with food and fruit are in front of them. A small plant is on the left. The scene is whimsical and playful.

The picnic, Frees, Harry Whittier, 1879-1953, photographer. No known restrictions on publication

London Met Library also has online resources for image searches , try Bridgeman Education or Artstor (London Met login will be required). Remember to check the copyright status of any image before you use it.
