Borrowing

At the library we have a huge range of books, e-books and journal articles to support your learning.  You can use Library Search to locate the items you need. 

If you need a book, chapter or article that is not held by London Metropolitan Library, we can usually obtain it for you from another institution whether you are student or staff.

Staff and students can borrow up to 20 items.

Borrowing using the library self-service machines is easy, all you need is your university ID card.  Watch our video to learn how to borrow. 

âš  You can't borrow journals, PhD theses and items marked as Reference Only; these are just for reading in the library.

They will stop renewing automatically if:

  • They have been reserved by someone else 

  • The item is already overdue 

  • Your account is blocked because you have a very overdue item issued to you 

  • Your fine has reached £20 

  • They have been renewed 99 times 

 

So make sure you always check your London Met email address for notifications about your loans

You can also check your loans and renew yourself when you login to your account via Library Search.

âš  Avoid fines- make sure you return reserved items immediately.

The Library is pleased to offer a Click & Collect Service, allowing you to reserve library print books whether they are currently available or on loan. You can choose your preferred pickup location, Aldgate or Holloway Road Library.  Books cannot be collected from Shoreditch but can be returned there.

1. Who can use this service?
All university staff, students, and other users with borrowing rights are eligible.

2. How many reservations can I make at any one time?
Staff and Students : Up to 10 active reservations. 
Alumni and SCONUL users: Up to 4 active reservations.

3. What items can be reserved?
Books available on one-week and three-week loan.

4. How long will my reserved item be held?
Reserved items will be held for 7 calendar days.

5. When will my reserved item be ready for pickup?
Available in-library items will be ready for collection by 12:00 PM on the next working day.
Items currently on loan will only be available after they have been returned by the previous borrower.
Note: Inter-campus transfers (e.g., from Holloway to Aldgate or vice versa) may take one or more working days due to delivery times between campuses.

6. How does this service work with the fetching service for students with special needs?
These students with fetching service provision can use Click & Collect to reserve books. They can also contact the Library Information Desk or email to library@londonmet.ac.uk for assistance.

7. How do I reserve a book?

a) To place book reservations, you need to first search on Library Search.  

b) From Library Search, click on the Books and Ebooks tab to look for books only.

c) Search for the print book you want and click More Information to go to the library catalogue record.

d) Click Reserve and enter your London Met username and password.

e) Select the campus library you wish to collect the item from.

f) You will receive an email when the item is ready to collect.

g) Pick up the item from the reservation shelves near the Library Information Desk in the specified pickup Library and check out on the self-service machine.

  • Self-service returns: Select the 'Return' option on the self-service machines at either library or at Shoreditch and follow the on-screen instructions. If there are any issues returning items then please go to the Library Information Desk during staffed hours.

  • Book Drop (Holloway Campus only): Post items into our book drop located to the left of the main entrance of Holloway Road Library. 

  • Postal delivery: If necessary, you can return items via Royal Mail to the following address:
